Now this is the difference between people with eyebrows and people without!
(The essay below was written by a De Anza student)

Matt, Sahil, Heather, and I were having a joyous time one day watching the Los Angeles Lakers play the San Antonio Spurs when Lisa Leslie, watching the game from the stands, appeared on the screen. Of course, us three men knew who she was, being the basketball experts that we were; however Heather asked, “Who was that?” The three of us started to laugh because we would think she would know who the most popular WNBA player was.  Sahil said, “She’s from the WNBA on the Los Angeles Sparks, but not many people know that because women sports are boring and they suck.” Surely he wasn’t being serious, however he hit a certain point. In mainstream America, athletics are widely perceived to be a male-dominated domain. Males are thought to be more athletic than females and therefore more watched. As such, there is a relative indifference to women in pro sports as opposed to men.
When was the last time you saw women in pro sports marketed for their talents? Female athletes are portrayed more for their beauty than their athletic abilities. Anna Kournikova, Venus Williams, and Serena Williams are all professional tennis players that were in the Swimsuit addition of Sports Illustrated. WMLS Soccer all star Mia Ham was just in a recent shampoo commercial portraying her beautiful hair instead of her great soccer talent. At the beginning of the WNBA season, they had a commercial of WNBA players in nice dresses and flirting with the camera telling the viewers to come watch the new season.
I guess you can say sex sells because female athletic ability doesn’t, which brings me to the next topic of how men have greater athletic ability than women. If the best player from the NBA were compared to the best player in the WNBA, there would be no comparison at all in athleticism. Comparing Kobe Bryant to Lisa Leslie for example would be a big joke because Kobe is taller, stronger, dribbles better, has better basketball fundamentals, shoots better, and can jump a lot higher than Lisa Leslie. Even though they can both dunk, Kobe Bryant can do a wide variety of dunks and almost all the players in the NBA can dunk while only a few people in the WNBA can do the same. Thereby making the competition weaker in the WNBA and making it less entertaining for people to watch.
When was the last time you heard of a really talented women being sponsored for athletic ability, and if you have; what was her name? Male athletes have been way more exploited by the media than female athletes. In newspapers such as the San Francisco Chronicle and San Jose Mercury News, male athlete’s stats are shown first over females or females aren’t shown at all. That gives female athletes a lot lesser chance and opportunity of making it to the pros because they don’t get recognized like the male athletes do. Nike sponsored the Cleveland Cavaliers all star Lebron James for 100 million dollars at the age of 18, before he even played an NBA game! Bubblicious gum also sponsored Lebron James with his own flavor and Sierra Mist sponsored 13 year old American soccer phenom Freddy Adu who plays for the DC United club team in Major League Soccer.
These two legends were in commercials that showed their athletic ability and not how they looked.  This motivates younger athletes to train harder to someday become like them. I do agree that the female anatomy plays a small role in being less athletic than a male, however I feel that that’s just a reason to not try as hard. With a lot of hard work and effort, these goals can be achieved for example now that Lisa Leslie can dunk, she should start to work on it more to make it more useful. Will female athletes ever reach the athletic ability, opportunities, and be marketed for their abilities as male athletes or will they stay in the position they are in being marketed for looks and ridiculed for their athletic ability like Sahil said? Possibly in a world where females can be actually looked at as athletes, and have the same opportunities as men will athletics be looked at differently in America.

Damn....life can be such a burn and so damn good at the same time. I wish I could just freeze time for a week, go away and relax stress free and carefree and then come back and pickup where i left off. I think imma try that Jamie Fox trick and put an island wallpaper as my desktop..i'll tell u how successful that is some day. On that note, me, my island and Rachel Mcadams will see you later!
